Introduction: The Story the Media Isn’t Telling
While Western media reports on Iran’s protests, nuclear threats, and regime brutality—they’re missing the biggest story.
Something extraordinary is happening in Iran. Something the ayatollahs can’t stop. Something unprecedented in Islamic history.
Iranians are converting to Christianity by the hundreds of thousands.
Not nominal Christianity. Not cultural Christianity. Radical, Spirit-filled, Jesus-following Christianity.
They’re meeting in homes. They’re sharing Bibles on flash drives. They’re baptizing in bathtubs. They’re risking prison and death to follow Christ.
And it’s happening so fast that researchers can’t keep up with the numbers.
Estimates of Iranian believers:
– 1979: ~300 known converts
– 2000: ~100,000 believers
– 2015: ~300,000-500,000 believers
– 2025: 500,000 to 2 million believers
This is the fastest-growing church (per capita) in the world.
The Islamic Republic wanted to create a pure Islamic state. Instead, they’re driving their people to Christ in numbers Islam has never seen.
God is moving in Iran.
The Numbers: How Big Is Iran’s Underground Church?
The Challenge of Counting
Exact numbers are impossible to verify because:
– Church is underground (secret meetings, no public registration)
– Government persecution (believers hide their faith)
– Rapid growth (estimates outdated quickly)
– Mixed data (different organizations use different methodologies)
Conservative Estimates
Operation World (2010): 100,000 believers
Joshua Project (2015): 300,000 believers
Christianity Today (2020): 500,000-800,000 believers
Transform Iran (2024): 1-2 million believers
Percentage of population:
– Iran’s population: ~88 million
– 1 million believers = 1.1% of population
– 2 million believers = 2.3% of population
This may seem small, but consider:
– In 1979, believers were 0.0003% of population
– Growth rate is exponential, not linear
– Most are former Muslims (not ethnic minorities)
– Many are young, zealous, and evangelistic
Why the Range Is So Wide
Different organizations count differently:
– Transform Iran: Counts anyone who identifies as Christian (includes secret believers, seekers, house church attenders)
– Conservative estimates: Only count baptized, regularly attending believers
– Some researchers: Include diaspora Iranians who converted after leaving Iran
The truth: We don’t know the exact number. But everyone agrees: It’s growing explosively.
How Did This Happen?
1. Islamic Republic’s Brutality Backfired
For 47 years, the regime has:
– Forced hijab on women
– Executed political dissidents
– Tortured prisoners
– Controlled every aspect of life
– Promised justice and delivered tyranny
Result: Iranians, especially youth, are disillusioned with Islam.
One former Muslim: “The ayatollahs showed us what Islam really is. If this is Allah’s perfect will, I don’t want Allah.”
The very oppression meant to enforce Islam is driving people away from it.
2. Satellite Television
Since the early 2000s, Christian satellite TV has broadcast into Iran:
– Mohabat TV (Persian Christian programming)
– SAT-7 PARS (Christian content for Farsi speakers)
– Transform Iran (gospel broadcasts, teaching, testimonies)
Despite government attempts to jam signals, millions watch. They hear:
– The gospel in their own language
– Testimonies of former Muslims
– Biblical teaching they’ve never heard
– Stories of Jesus they were never told in Islam
One Iranian believer: “I was flipping channels and heard about Jesus. I thought, ‘This can’t be right—but I want to know more.’ Six months later I was baptized.”
3. Social Media and Technology
Iranians use VPNs to access:
– YouTube sermons
– Facebook groups for seekers
– WhatsApp Bible studies
– Telegram channels with gospel content
– Online discipleship materials
Despite censorship, the gospel spreads digitally. One person shares a video, it goes to 10 friends, they share it to 100 more.
The government can’t monitor every smartphone.
4. Dreams and Visions
Repeatedly, Iranian believers report coming to Christ through supernatural encounters:
– Dreams of Jesus
– Visions while seeking truth
– Miraculous healings
– Angelic visitations
One testimony: “I dreamed of a man in white who said, ‘I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.’ When I woke up, I knew I had to find out who He was. Two weeks later, a neighbor invited me to a house church. When they showed me John 14:6, I knew—that was Him.”
God is revealing Himself directly to Muslims seeking truth.
5. The Witness of Believers
Despite persecution, Iranian Christians boldly share their faith:
– In prisons (where they’re sent for being Christian)
– With family members (risking rejection)
– Through underground networks
– By living differently (love, joy, peace in suffering)
Their transformed lives raise questions: “Why are you different? Why do you have hope when everything is falling apart?”
And they answer: Jesus.
What Does Church Look Like in Iran?
House Churches
The primary structure is small house churches:
– 5-20 people meeting in homes
– Rotating locations (to avoid detection)
– No public advertising
– Minimal online presence
– Connected through trusted networks
Security measures:
– Phones turned off or left outside
– Curtains closed
– Worship volume kept low
– New members vetted carefully (regime infiltrators are common)
Leadership
Pastors are usually:
– Converts from Islam (not ethnic minorities)
– Self-taught or trained via online courses
– Often young (20s-30s)
– Financially unsupported (secular jobs during week)
– Risking everything to lead
Many have been arrested, tortured, or imprisoned. Yet they continue.
Worship
Iranian house churches worship with:
– Translated worship songs (often from English)
– Guitars or keyboards (if safe)
– A cappella singing (if not safe)
– Intense passion (they’ve given up everything for Christ)
One Western visitor: “I’ve never experienced worship like this. They sang like their lives depended on it—because they do.”
Teaching
Discipleship happens through:
– Translated materials (smuggled or downloaded)
– Satellite TV teaching (recorded and shared)
– Mentorship from more mature believers
– Basic Bible studies (many are brand new believers)
The challenge: Growth is so fast that discipleship can’t keep up. New believers need teaching, but trained leaders are scarce.
Sacraments
Baptism: Done in bathtubs, pools, rivers (secretly, usually at night)
Communion: Bread and grape juice (wine would attract suspicion) in homes
Both are incredibly meaningful because both are evidence of apostasy from Islam—punishable by death.
The Cost of Following Jesus in Iran
Legal Persecution
Under Iranian law:
– Apostasy from Islam = death penalty (rarely enforced but legally permissible)
– Evangelizing Muslims = 10+ years in prison
– Holding house churches = “acting against national security” = long prison sentences
– Possessing Christian materials = confiscation and fines
Arrest and Imprisonment
Hundreds of Christians are currently imprisoned:
– Raids on house churches
– Arrests for “propaganda against the state”
– Held in Evin Prison (notorious for torture)
– Long sentences (10-15 years common)
– Some executed
Recent cases (2022-2025):
– Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani: Arrested multiple times, served years in prison
– Dozens arrested in Christmas raids (2024)
– Underground church leaders targeted specifically
Torture
Believers report:
– Beatings
– Solitary confinement
– Psychological torture
– Forced renunciation of faith
– Threats against family members
Yet most refuse to deny Christ.
Social Persecution
Beyond legal punishment:
– Family rejection: Parents disown converts, siblings cut contact
– Loss of employment: Fired when faith is discovered
– Divorce: Muslim spouses divorce converts (required by law)
– Loss of inheritance: Apostates lose all rights
– Social ostracism: Friends abandon them
Becoming a Christian in Iran means losing everything.
And yet, they keep converting.
Why Are Iranians Converting?
1. Islam Has Failed Them
47 years of Islamic Republic showed them:
– Islam doesn’t bring justice (corruption rampant)
– Islam doesn’t bring peace (violence and oppression)
– Islam doesn’t bring freedom (brutal control)
– Islam doesn’t bring prosperity (economic collapse)
– Islam doesn’t bring happiness (suicide rates climbing)
Islam promised heaven. It delivered hell.
2. Jesus Offers What Islam Never Could
When Iranians hear the gospel, they encounter:
– Grace (not works-based salvation)
– Love (not fear-based religion)
– Forgiveness (not endless striving)
– Relationship with God (not distant, angry deity)
– Hope (not fatalism)
– Freedom (not bondage)
One convert: “In Islam, I never knew if I was good enough. With Jesus, I know I’m loved. That changes everything.”
3. They See Jesus Is Different
Comparing Muhammad and Jesus:
– Muhammad conquered by sword; Jesus conquered by cross
– Muhammad killed enemies; Jesus loved enemies
– Muhammad took wives; Jesus gave Himself for His bride (the church)
– Muhammad built an empire; Jesus built the Kingdom of God
Jesus is unique. And Iranians recognize it.
4. The Gospel Answers Their Deepest Questions
Iranians are asking:
– “Why is there so much suffering?”
– “Can I be forgiven?”
– “Does God love me?”
– “What happens after death?”
– “Is there hope?”
Islam offers no satisfying answers. The gospel does.
Persecution Produces Growth
Here’s the pattern throughout church history:
Tertullian (200 AD): “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.”
China: Mao tried to eradicate Christianity (1949-1976). Result: Church grew from 1 million to 100+ million.
Soviet Union: 70 years of atheistic persecution. Result: Underground church survived and thrived.
North Korea: Most brutal persecution on earth. Result: 300,000+ believers despite Kim regime.
Iran: 47 years of Islamic oppression. Result: Fastest-growing church in the world.
Why Does Persecution Produce Growth?
1. It purifies the church
Only genuine believers remain. No cultural Christians.
2. It makes the gospel valuable
When following Christ costs everything, people realize He’s worth everything.
3. It demonstrates authenticity
When believers suffer and still praise Jesus, non-believers notice: “Why would they risk death for a lie?”
4. It forces dependence on God
No buildings, budgets, or programs. Only the Holy Spirit.
5. God promises to use it
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you” (Isaiah 43:2)
The ayatollahs thought persecution would destroy the church. Instead, it’s fuel for explosive growth.
How God Is Using Suffering for Good
This is where Savage Mercies theology becomes crucial.
Why does God allow Iranian believers to suffer?
Because He’s using their suffering to accomplish purposes we can only partially see:
1. Exposing Islam’s Bankruptcy
When the Islamic Republic persecutes Christians—arrests them, tortures them, kills them—the world sees what Islam truly produces.
God is using suffering to demonstrate: Islam oppresses. Jesus liberates.
2. Refining Iranian Believers
“He knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.” (Job 23:10)
Iranian Christians are being refined through suffering. They’re becoming spiritually mature at rapid rates. They’re learning to trust God in ways comfortable Western Christians never will.
Their suffering is producing eternal weight of glory (2 Corinthians 4:17).
3. Preparing Iran for Its Prophetic Role
Jeremiah 49:39 promises God will “restore the fortunes of Elam in the latter days.”
Could the current underground church be the beginning of that restoration?
Could God be raising up millions of Iranian believers who will:
– Spread the gospel throughout the Middle East
– Plant churches in other Islamic nations
– Become missionaries to the Muslim world
– Play a role in end-times events
God may be preparing Iran for something we can’t yet see.
4. Driving More Iranians to Christ
Counterintuitively, when believers are persecuted publicly, more Iranians convert privately.
Why? Because:
– They see Christians willing to die for their faith
– They question why the regime fears Christianity so much
– They wonder what could be so powerful that people would risk everything
– They seek out the gospel to find answers
Persecution intended to stop the church is advertising the gospel.
5. Vindicating God’s Name
When God delivers Iranian believers—protects them, strengthens them, grows His church despite brutal opposition—He demonstrates His power.
Every believer who survives prison is a testimony.
Every house church that multiplies despite raids is a miracle.
Every Iranian who chooses Christ over family, job, and safety is evidence that Jesus is real.
God is vindicating His name in Iran.
What Can Christians Do?
1. Pray Specifically
- For protection: That believers escape arrest and persecution
- For boldness: That they continue sharing despite fear
- For growth: That millions more come to Christ
- For discipleship: That new believers are taught truth
- For regime fall: That oppression ends
- For open doors: That house churches can worship freely
2. Support Ministry
Organizations reaching Iran:
– Transform Iran (satellite TV, Bibles, training)
– Mohabat TV (Christian broadcasting)
– International Christian Concern (advocacy for persecuted believers)
– Voice of the Martyrs (support for families of imprisoned Christians)
3. Learn Their Stories
Read testimonies. Watch videos. Understand their sacrifice. Let their faith challenge your comfortable Christianity.
Recommended resources:

4. Speak Up
- Share their stories on social media
- Contact legislators about religious freedom in Iran
- Educate your church about the underground church
- Don’t let the world ignore their suffering
5. Examine Your Own Faith
If Iranian believers are willing to lose everything for Jesus, what are you willing to sacrifice?
Their faith should convict us. Challenge us. Inspire us.
The Future of Iran’s Church
What happens next?
Scenario 1: Regime Falls, Church Emerges
If the Islamic Republic collapses:
– Underground church could emerge publicly
– Explosive open evangelism
– Iran could become center of Christian revival in Middle East
– Fulfillment of “restore fortunes of Elam” (Jeremiah 49:39)
Scenario 2: Persecution Increases, Church Grows Faster
If regime survives short-term:
– Persecution may intensify
– But history shows: more persecution = more growth
– Church continues multiplying underground
– Iranian believers become even more radical
Scenario 3: Both/And
- Regime eventually falls (could take years)
- Meanwhile, church continues growing underground
- When it emerges, it’s massive, mature, and missionary-minded
Either way, God is winning in Iran.
The Greatest Irony
The Islamic Republic wanted to create the perfect Islamic state.
Instead, they’ve created:
– The fastest-growing church in the Islamic world
– Hundreds of thousands of former Muslims following Jesus
– A generation of zealous Iranian missionaries
– Proof that persecution cannot stop the gospel
Ayatollah Khomeini died in 1989. The church he tried to destroy is thriving.
This is what happens when you try to thwart God’s purposes.
Prayer
Father,
You are moving powerfully in Iran. You’re calling Iranians to Yourself by the hundreds of thousands. You’re using suffering to refine them and expose Islam’s lies.
We pray:
– Protect Iranian believers from arrest and torture
– Give them supernatural boldness
– Save millions more
– Raise up mature leaders quickly
– Topple the regime that oppresses them
– Fulfill Your promise to restore Elam
– Let the Iranian church emerge in power
– Use Iranian believers as missionaries to the Middle East
Do what only You can do. Turn suffering into glory. Turn persecution into growth.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
