– Curtains closed

– Financially unsupported (secular jobs during week)

China: Mao tried to eradicate Christianity (1949-1976). Result: Church grew from 1 million to 100+ million.

Soviet Union: 70 years of atheistic persecution. Result: Underground church survived and thrived.

North Korea: Most brutal persecution on earth. Result: 300,000+ believers despite Kim regime.

Iran: 47 years of Islamic oppression. Result: Fastest-growing church in the world.

Why Does Persecution Produce Growth?

3. It demonstrates authenticity
When believers suffer and still praise Jesus, non-believers notice: “Why would they risk death for a lie?”

4. It forces dependence on God
No buildings, budgets, or programs. Only the Holy Spirit.

5. God promises to use it

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you” (Isaiah 43:2)

The ayatollahs thought persecution would destroy the church. Instead, it’s fuel for explosive growth.

How God Is Using Suffering for Good

Jeremiah 49:39 promises God will “restore the fortunes of Elam in the latter days.”

Could the current underground church be the beginning of that restoration?

Could God be raising up millions of Iranian believers who will:

– Plant churches in other Islamic nations
– Become missionaries to the Muslim world
– Play a role in end-times events

God may be preparing Iran for something we can’t yet see.

4. Driving More Iranians to Christ

Counterintuitively, when believers are persecuted publicly, more Iranians convert privately.

Why? Because:
– They see Christians willing to die for their faith
– They question why the regime fears Christianity so much
– They wonder what could be so powerful that people would risk everything
– They seek out the gospel to find answers

Persecution intended to stop the church is advertising the gospel.

5. Vindicating God’s Name

When God delivers Iranian believers—protects them, strengthens them, grows His church despite brutal opposition—He demonstrates His power.

Every believer who survives prison is a testimony.
Every house church that multiplies despite raids is a miracle.
Every Iranian who chooses Christ over family, job, and safety is evidence that Jesus is real.

God is vindicating His name in Iran.

What Can Christians Do?

1. Pray Specifically

• For protection: That believers escape arrest and persecution
• For boldness: That they continue sharing despite fear
• For growth: That millions more come to Christ
• For discipleship: That new believers are taught truth
• For regime fall: That oppression ends
• For open doors: That house churches can worship freely

2. Support Ministry

Organizations reaching Iran:

Either way, God is winning in Iran.

The Greatest Irony

The Islamic Republic wanted to create the perfect Islamic state.

Instead, they’ve created:
– The fastest-growing church in the Islamic world
– Hundreds of thousands of former Muslims following Jesus
– A generation of zealous Iranian missionaries
– Proof that persecution cannot stop the gospel

Ayatollah Khomeini died in 1989. The church he tried to destroy is thriving.

This is what happens when you try to thwart God’s purposes.

Father,

You are moving powerfully in Iran. You’re calling Iranians to Yourself by the hundreds of thousands. You’re using suffering to refine them and expose Islam’s lies.

We pray:
– Protect Iranian believers from arrest and torture
– Give them supernatural boldness
– Save millions more
– Raise up mature leaders quickly
– Topple the regime that oppresses them
– Fulfill Your promise to restore Elam
– Let the Iranian church emerge in power
– Use Iranian believers as missionaries to the Middle East

Do what only You can do. Turn suffering into glory. Turn persecution into growth.
